Claudio & Roberto Franchi

Silver and Goldsmiths

I hope that our workshop’s legacy is to transmit to those who may purchase our items the joy we experience in making a living by making. That in their daily interactions with these works, our clients discover a sort of dialogue. These objects, our objects, have a soul and a story to tell.
— Claudio Franchi

The Franchi family workshop is one of the Municipality of Rome's prestigious Workshops of Historical Safeguard and has received numerous commissions from the Vatican, including the creation of the papal ring for Pope Benedict XVI and the silver and gold ceremonial icon used by Pope Francis at Easter. Brothers Claudio and Roberto learned their craft as young children from their father Adolfo Franchi, himself an apprentice since the age of ten to the Vitali workshop. Their work reflects their heritage and training at the Roman Goldsmith School.

The representation of an idea articulated through form becomes a process of storytelling. Every choice of technique, every element in the constructive process, is a creative aspect considered during the design phase when the form exists only as an idea.
— Claudio Franchi

Roberto (left) and Claudio (right) employ  a variety of sophisticated techniques in transforming precious metal into objects of art. To create the Curva Water Vessel, they begin by hammering a sheet of sterling silver, tied with wire into the shape of a cylinder, against an anvil. This shapes the form as well as hardens the silver. To render it pliable, they intermittently expose the piece to direct fire, and repeat the process until the object is ready for further refinement. This method, known as annealing, dates back to the expert craftsmanship of ancient Rome.

These ideas are expressed in a myriad of textures that create unusual luminous effects. Rather than minimalist or maximalist, their forms reflect an aesthetic best described as essential: primordial lines, distinct geometry, and a preference for evidence of the maker's hand to an overworked final product.

Their inspiration comes from a diverse range of sources: ancient artifacts, primordial geography, the geometry of nature, and Roman iconography.

 MOONLIGHT

MOONLIGHT

Moonlight recalls the chiaroscuro and contrasting textures of its lunar muse. This series takes inspiration from a verse of Shakespeare which describes the alluring and capricious nature of moonlight, words that evoked in Claudio Franchi's mind the dynamic, transformative qualities of silver.

 GEOMETRIA

GEOMETRIA

Geometria revisits the Renaissance fascination with golden proportions and organic geometry, incorporating an element of dynamism in movement as well as texture to create an unprecedented oeuvre. These bold, sculptural pieces highlight the careful precision of their handcrafting.

 BOSCOREALE

BOSCOREALE

Boscoreale is a contemporary take on one of the world's most important collections of silver, the ancient Boscoreale Treasure unearthed from the vicinity of Pompeii and held at the Louvre. The Epicurean themes and visual motifs are expressed with more abstract geometric patterns, maintaining the tradition of exquisite repoussage.

History of Silver

History of Silver

Silver has been revered by mankind for thousands of years, owing to its cool luster, purifying properties, and resilience. Its rarity can be traced to its formation; unlike more common elements in the universe, silver is forged only in the explosive heart of a supernova. Versatility is inherent in its structure, and it can be rendered as thin as a strand of hair to produce exceptional works of filigree. These qualities have made it the chosen medium for items as precious as fine jewelry, as necessary as currency, and as quotidian as flatware. Requiring tremendous organization to both mine and shape, it is an emblem of civilization. We encourage you to explore the art history of silver in articles from our online journal The Expert Eye.
