Master Luthier of Violins & Violas

SCROLL DOWN

Michel Eggimann

Master Luthier of Violins & Violas

The art of making violins is full of secrets, and Cremona holds them tightly to her chest. That is why for me, there was only one place to learn my craft. Choosing a block of spruce by its touch and smell, knowing the formula for an inimitable red Stradivari varnish... I will take these mysteries to my grave.

Meet the Maestro: the Violin Maker of Rome

Michel Eggimann is a luthier specializing in violins and violas inspired by the 17th and 18th century masters Stradivari and Guarneri. His instruments all exhibit the signature oil varnish that distinguishes Cremonese artisanship.

After assisting at the workshop of Philippe Giradin in Switzerland, in 1986 he obtained his luthier’s diploma from Cremona's International School of Violin Making under the guidance of Maestro Vincenzo Bissolotti.

While studying there, he received 4th place in the IV Triennale Internazionale di Cremona for a violin, a major accomplishment for a luthier only at the beginning of his career. Since then, he has gone on to receive further recognition for his work, including the Stauffer Prize for a copy of a 1742 Guarneri del Gesù.

Living in Cremona, the world capital and birthplace of the violin, he perfected his art and established many long-lasting relationships with world-renowned musicians, among them:

The Melos Quartet of Stuttgart, The Trio des Iscles (now Dumky Trio) of Paris, Duilio Galfetti (founder and first violin of the Barocchisti of Lugano), Stefan Toens, Katerin Melcher, Augustin Hadelisch, Yorrick Troman… as well as the new generation of violinists from Barcelona.

After working in the workshop of Curtin and Alf, well-know American luthiers practicing in Cremona, he moved to Tuscany and finally Rome, establishing his own workshop in the heart of the historic city center where traditional Roman luthiers have always come.
