Ceramics and Glass Restorers

My father started this profession when he was only a boy, apprenticing a block away from our workshop today. Back then Via Angelo Brunetti was filled with ceramic workshops and restoration studios. Today we’re the only ones left.

A Mending Hand

From porcelain teacups to Murano glass chandeliers, the Santolini family has been putting together the pieces of fragile masterpieces since 1969. Well known and trusted by European antique dealers and contemporary galleries alike, this father and daughter pair are known as the best in Rome to restore ceramic, enamel, and glass works.

Antonio Santolini, who founded the workshop, and his daughter Simona both delight in rendering what was once an imperfection a point of strength. "A good repair is like a healed bone. If mended correctly, there are no scars, and the point of fracture becomes stronger after than it was before the injury," says Antonio Santolini. In addition to reassembling works with appropriate materials after a thorough diagnostic process, they also recreate missing parts and retouch missing paint. The artisanal element of their work is what makes them true masters. Antonio trained his artistic hands as an apprentice from the age of 11. For Simona, genetics and lifelong exposure to the profession have gifted her with an expertise that exceeds any learning from a textbook.

In addition to their restoration laboratory, they also offer restored antiques for interested collectors. "Dealers are sometimes eager to get rid of a broken collectible, even a great work of Renaissance maiolica or blue-and-white Qing Dynasty porcelain, without knowing how simple and invisible the repair can be. We enjoy finding these treasures and giving them a new life with collectors," says Simona Santolini with a smile.
